Looking for a new free isp? Do you want to try free internet access? We have the scoop on NetZero, BlueLight, Juno, Going Platinum, DotNow and many others. Altavista free isp, FreeLane free internet service and NBCi free internet access have all discontinued free Internet service, but there are many more free ISPs to choose from. Free internet access is alive and well. Free DSL is on it's way. The free isp model is not dead, it is evolving. You can expect big changes in free Internet service in the next year or two.
![]() The biggest free internet service provider and connection times have improved a little since they implemented their "pay after 40 hours" policy, (See below) but now we get bumped off much more frequently. Large add banner (can be made a little smaller by switching to icon mode ) but you can dock it top or bottom or it will 'float'. E-mail is included and you can configure it to work with Outlook or Eudora. Effective 01-01-2001 NetZero is limiting their subscribers' time on line to 40 hours per month. After that users must pay $9.95 for access until the next month. U.S. and Canada. No Macintosh support.
Formally Spinway, it was taken over by parent company K-Mart . They are usually easy to log on to but will bump you off without warning. Medium sized add banner can dock top or bottom or 'float'. Partnered with Yahoo for E-mail and web hosting. Effective 03-06-2001 BlueLight is restricting it's subscribers to 12 hours a month. After 12 hours the customer is cut off until the following month. 100 hours of service can be purchased for $9.95 / month, or subscribers can receive unlimited access by purchasing goods from BlueLight .com. ( Discontinued Mac support effective 02-28-2001)
Juno offers both free internet access and paid connections. Currently they are trying to discourage 'web hogs' on their free lines by putting them low on the connection priority list. If you use the web a lot this is probably not for you. Juno's start page is similar to AOL. It has it's own built in browser with search, favorites, (imported from IE Explorer ) read/write E-mail ect., and you can check your E-mail (included) without actually logging on to the net. A good choice if you primarily use the Internet for E-mail. All in all we have found them a reliable service for E-mail but they have seriously restricted their free subscribers online time. Large banner, doesn't dock . Free web hosting with Homestead.
Premium unlimited access with no ad bars, no bill.
This one's being hyped and spammed to the N'th degree all over the Internet. That's a shame because this is a first class organization. The failure of the free ISP model is evidence that the Internet is changing and Going Platinum is leading this evolution by taking the best of what works in internet marketing to the next level, and adding about 400 new things as well. Their free ISP is on a first come first served basis. Membership is 100% free so we suggest that you sign up early. Free DSL (for active members ) also coming soon. This one is Global. Supports Macintosh. Screen shot
NEW!! Beginning 04-01 they are also offering unfiltered service
New filtered free ISP. Filtered means they block access to offensive web sites. The software is large (4.3 MB) and they also take over your browser. The ad bar is huge and docks top or bottom only. No mention of time limits though. There was a blurb in the terms of service that mentioned something about getting paid to use their service but no details. Their software has caused browser issues with some users. Supports Mac.
DSL
First month FREE!!. Free activation and free 'plug-and-play' DSL modem that you can install yourself. NO contracts so if you don't like their DSL service you're not stuck. Monthly charge varies by location.
Their new 5.5 software seems to be working for those who persist at trying to get connected. Reports have been, for the most part, favorable, although some still report problems. U.S. and Canada
Canadian free ISP. They advertise service to 100+ communities across Canada. Family oriented.
Free DSL. Out of service. 03-10-2001 The idea of free DSL is not dead. There will be others.
This free ISP is for American Express card holders only. The service includes E-mail. 24/7 free service and online bill paying.
(This service is temporarily unavailable to new subscribers.)
FreeLane
Gone (again!) as of 03-01-2001. Too bad as they were always one of our favorites. Perhaps they will return?
After going under last October it appears they are back. They have no software to download. You must submit your name and address and they will send you a CD via snail mail. As soon as we get our CD we'll let you know more. (It's been over 6 weeks and still no CD. Anybody else get theirs?) 04-07-2001 we give up!!
